The Science Behind Exfoliation and Why It’s Key to a Youthful Glow

Thorough cleansing, toning, and moisturizing are essential skin care steps, but if you don’t exfoliate, you’re skipping a key part of your health and beauty regimen.

Exfoliation is when you gently remove dead skin cells from your skin’s surface, sloughing off the “old” skin to expose the healthy new skin underneath. Though your skin exfoliates naturally every 28 days (but slows down as you age), this generally isn’t fast enough to keep it looking and feeling its best.

Although your skin gets rougher, laxer, and duller as you age, Dr. Sharon Gertzman at Serenity Medical Spa offers innovative methods for freshening it with exfoliation. We can restore your skin to its youthful beauty with advanced treatments incorporating radiofrequency (RF) technology.

Why is exfoliation important?

Exfoliation is essential for radiant skin because of its many benefits, including:

Now that you understand the considerable advantages of exfoliation, there are several ways to do it.

You can exfoliate your skin at home using scrubs, exfoliating cloths, or brushes. You can also undergo microdermabrasion treatment (a minimally invasive in-office procedure). If you exfoliate your skin at home, it’s important to be very careful to treat it gently—resist the urge to scrub too hard.

Chemical exfoliation (chemical peels) uses alpha or beta hydroxy acids (AHAs and BHAs) or fruit-based enzymes to rid your skin of roughness and impurities.

Serenity also offers exciting exfoliation methods, such as RF treatments, which use radiofrequency energy to exfoliate your skin.

The benefits of radiofrequency (RF) skin exfoliation

RF treatments use low-frequency electromagnetic waves to heat your skin and stimulate collagen production, critical to the skin’s ability to bounce back.

We offer two RF treatments that gently strip your skin of what it doesn’t need while revealing even, smoothed, healthy skin.

1. VivaceRF

Vivace RF treatments blend RF treatment with microneedling. Dr. Gertzman uses a small device to make tiny punctures in your skin that stimulate its healing response, as well as collagen and elastin (another essential protein) production.

Patients love Vivace RF because it’s a comfortable, quick in-office procedure (don’t worry — Dr. Gertzman applies a topical anesthetic before treatment to ensure your comfort) that not only exfoliates your skin but also addresses skin laxity and even acne scars — with no risk of hypo- or hyperpigmentation.

Dr. Gertzman most often recommends a series of three treatments one month apart for ideal results. Post-treatment care simply involves avoiding skin products containing acids, staying in the shade, and ensuring you drink enough water. Hold off on showering for at least 12 hours after treatment, and don’t apply makeup for 12-24 hours.

2. TempSureEnvi

Another popular skin exfoliation and renewal treatment is TempSure Envi, another noninvasive, brief in-office treatment. Dr. Gertzman uses a small device to direct healing RF energy far into your skin to promote elastin and collagen production.

TempSure Envi illuminates, smooths, and tightens your skin impressively, yet it requires zero post-treatment downtime.

You begin to see results right away, and Dr. Gertzman advises you on a treatment schedule based on your needs and goals.

Exfoliation reveals the beautiful skin you’ve always had by sweeping away undesirable flakes, excess oil, roughness, and more.

We also offer an extraordinary line of ZO skincare products, which help you maintain the results of your treatment and allow you to pamper your skin daily.
