As many as 33% of men and women who get tattoos later have regrets. And at one time, a tattoo was a permanent and indelible reminder of their questionable decision. Now, though, laser treatment provides a second chance for those with second thoughts. But not all tattoo removal lasers are equally effective.

Dr. Sharon Gertzman and our team at Serenity Medical Spa use the PicoSure® system from Cynosure® for fast and effective tattoo removal, as well as for other laser cosmetic treatments. So what’s special about the PicoSure system? Let’s delve deeper into laser tattoo removal.

How laser tattoo removal works

Laser light delivers a concentrated, high-energy beam of a single wavelength of light. Because the wavelength is narrow, tuning of this beam permits it to pass through some tissue while being absorbed by others. Where the light energy is absorbed, it converts to heat and affects the target.

When it comes to tattoos, it’s the ink of the tattoo that serves as the target. One reason that tattoos are permanent is that the particles of ink used to create the image are too large for your body’s waste disposal system to flush away. The seemingly simple solution is to make tattoo ink particles smaller, so your lymphatic system can do its job.

Nanosecond lasers versus PicoSure

Formerly, traditional Q-switched lasers were the go-to for tattoo removal. But those treatments were effective on some tattoo inks and less so on others.

The problem was the duration of these lasers’ pulses. They could only deliver laser light in nanosecond pulses (one-billionth of a second), so the amount of energy they could deliver was limited. That’s because the energy/time relationship must balance to prevent damage to other tissue.

PicoSure, on the other hand, delivers pulses of one-trillionth of a second. That means the amount of light energy delivered can be increased, since the duration of the pulse is so much shorter. When an ink particle is hit with this higher-energy pulse, it breaks into much smaller particles than is possible with a long-duration laser. More ink is shattered into the bite-size pieces that your lymphatic system can easily dispose of.

Removing all tattoo colors

PicoSure first delivered laser energy in the 755 nanometer (nm) range, which, while effective, was less efficient on ink colors in the red, orange, and yellow ranges. But a recent advance added treatment at 523 nm. This shorter wavelength provides much better results with inks in this color range.

This dual wavelength capability means that PicoSure targets the widest range of tattoo ink colors of any laser tattoo removal system.

The result is better first-time results and fewer follow-up treatments, giving you the best chance at fast, complete tattoo removal.
