Tired of plucking, waxing or shaving to remove unwanted hair? At Serenity Medical Spa we have a quick, easy and effective way to remove unwanted hair permanently! Laser Hair Removal can be done on almost any area of the body, some of the most popular being the face, underarms, bikini line and legs. Using the most up to date laser technology, our Lumenis laser allows the follicles of hair to be targeted, removing the hair at the root. The laser works on the pigmentation in the hair follicle, so grey or white hairs cannot be targeted. The laser can be used on all skin types. The treatment procedure is very simple. Let’s say you would like the hair on your upper lip permanently removed. First Dr. Gertzman will apply a small amount of gel to the area being treated. She will then apply the laser directly to the area. After several pulse to cover the entire area, your first treatment is completed. Possible side effects include a slight redness at the treatment sight, but this usually disappears within minutes. The lasered skin is very sensitive to the sun, so we will apply sunscreen before you leave the office. We stongly recommend that you continue to use sunscreen and be especially cautious of the sun while having your treatments done. Most people will require between 4-8 treatments, spaced from 6-10 weeks apart. Once completed, the amount of hair in the area will be permanently reduced by as much as 90%, and you will be free from waxing, shaving and plucking!

December is Sculptra month at Serenity Medical Spa. For the entire month of December you can buy one vial of Sculptra and receive another vial completely free! For those of you not sure if Sculptra is right for you, here is some information. Sculptra, whose parent company is Sanofi-Aventis, is a poly-L-Lactic acid injectable. It is both biocompatible and biodegradable which means that it will not harm the body and that it can also be broken down by the body. It is primarily used to fill in gaunt or hollow looking cheeks, caused by aging, weight loss or chronic illness. Sculptra is injected deep below the surface of the skin in the areas where fat loss has occurred. Most people need 3 treatments of 2 vials each. Results are gradual and you can usually see visible changes after your second treatment. Your cheeks will appear fuller and more youthful, your under eye area will lose it “baggy” appearance. Treatments longevity can vary, but generally, Sculptra can last up to 2 to 3 years! At that time you may require some minor touch ups to maintain the fresh, youthful look you have grown accustomed to. As with any injectable, there is a slight chance of bruising and swelling, which can be taken care of with concealer and ice. Most people assume the only way to erase fine lines and wrinkles is with Botox. We are now offering a faster acting treatment called Dysport. Like Botox, Dysport is an injectable. It has the same indications that Botox does. The most popular places to use Dysport are the outsides of your eyes (commonly referred to as “crow’s feet”), your forehead and in between your eyes. Unlike Botox, with Dysport you will see an effect the same day the treatment is done, and it will continue to improve over a week. Dysport also seems to last longer than Botox, giving some patients over 6 months of smooth, wrinkle free skin. There are virtually no side effects, other than a slight redness or swelling at the injection sight. This can be eliminated by applying ice to the area, and will usually disappear within the hour. Some people who are especially prone may experience slight bruising which can easily be covered up with make-up and rarely lasts more than a day or so.

Summer is long gone and winter is fast approaching, so why are you still wondering about the “freckles” on your face? In reality, those “freckles”, or “dark spots” are actually sun damage caused by years of overexposure to the sun. Very often they will appear more prevalent in the summertime or right after, since exposure to the sun is generally higher at this time of year. The good news is that here at Serenity Medical Spa we have a simple and effective way to treat “freckles” or “dark spots”. Using the latest in laser technology we can permanently remove those spots from your face or other parts of your body. 
For mild to moderate sun damage you would receive Intense Pulse Light Treatment for Sun Damage, or IPL for short. Using a Lumenis laser, I would first cover your face (or other body part) with a soothing gel. I would then apply the laser to your face, gently moving from side to side and top to bottom until the entire face is covered. After the laser is finished, I simply wipe off the gel and apply a sunscreen/moisturizer. The sunscreen is a very important part of the treatment. After being treated, the skin is fresh and new. It is very important that this new skin not be exposed to the sun without protection, as it may burn easily, causing more sun damage. Wearing a hat outdoors for a few days with an SPF of 30 or greater is a good idea. Always apply sunscreen when leaving the house! As part of my own skin care line, Serenity Skincare, we have a wonderful sunscreen/moisturizer called SPFProtect43, which you can purchase when you have your IPLS (Intense Pulse Light Treatment for Sun Damage) done. This product is also available online at www.fixurskin.com. Number of treatments vary, from one to four, depending on the extent of your sun damage. Many people will achieve the results they are looking for with just one treatment. Another benefit of IPLS is that it will stimulate collagen growth giving your face a more youthful appearance, smoothing skin and tightening pores.
